Christy, Mom to 1 Spastic Quad Cerebral Palsy.
My name is Christy. My husband Joe & I are the lucky parents of Owen. Owen was born on Thanksgiving Day, 2006 at only 24 weeks gestation. Sometime during his first week, Owen suffered a bilateral brain bleed which resulted in brain damage. We watched him struggle, progress, grow and change on a daily basis for 16 weeks when finally, and happily, we were able to bring Owen home just 5 days after his original due date. The brain damage made things more difficult for Owen from the start. Things that come naturally to a lot of children, Owen has to learn. His developmental milestones were pretty significantly delayed. Just before his 2nd birthday, Owen was diagnosed with Spastic Quad Cerebral Palsy. Even though we expected the diagnosis, it still took quite some time for us to tell anyone outside of our immediate family.
Owen just turned 5 years old in November, 2011. He’s a funny, bright little boy who loves to eat, play baseball, go on bike rides, swim and read…the list could go on for awhile! He can be sneaky and likes to play “tricks” on people. Owen has a charming smile that draws people in no matter where we go. Owen is very determined and,
with the help of some wonderful doctors & therapists, continues to make great progress. He’s learned to sit independently, stand independently for short periods, walk with a gait trainer or assistance and is learning how to crawl and drive his wheelchair. We’re excited every day to see what Owen has learned.
Having somewhere to share struggles, frustrations, fears, ideas and accomplishments no matter how big or small has made a world of difference for us as parents. We’re so thankful for the friends we’ve made in this group.
